山形の上山から時々おいでになるお客様から、紅花の花を一抱えも頂いた。友人のお花屋さんが探してくれたのだという。
6月半ばから7月にかけてが最盛期のはず、頂いたのは1月も前、活花用に栽培された物なのでしょうが高価なものを頂いて恐縮してしまった。
紅花は山形が主産地、県の花のも指定されていると聞きます。昔は会津でも盛んに栽培されていたらしく様々な記録に見える。
原産地は何とエジプトだといわれていてエジプトではミイラの屍衣を紅花で山吹色に染めたと言われている。虫除けに効果があると信じられていたらしい
その後紅花は薬や染料に利用する目的で世界中に広まり栽培されたといいます。日本に渡来したのはシルクロードを通って飛鳥時代に伝わったとも言われている。
随分前に、乾燥して板海苔のようになっている紅花を誰から頂いた。それできれいな紅色の食前酒を作ろうとしてホワイトリカーに漬けてしばらく置いた、すると山吹色になったがいっこうに赤くなる気配が無い。
又香も独特で体にはよさそうな感じはしましたが、美味しいものではなかった。料亭時代たくさんの花の酒や木の実の食前酒を作りはしたがそのような失敗が多かったような気がする
